Algorithms for Climate Models Scalable to TeraFLOPS Performance

PI: Max Suarez, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center

Scientific Grand Challenge: To develop a high-resolution coupled global climate model capable of centuries-long calculation utilizing state-of-the-art global circulation models (GCMs) of the ocean and atmosphere with improved models of land surface processes, including the effects of vegetation.

Scientific Understanding: To test (1) the predictions of a coupled atmospheric/ocean model with 4x the present resolution and (2) its ability to predict or reproduce measured parameters.

Computational Challenge: Computational Challenge: To run simulations of the coupled global climate model for period of centuries, as opposed to decades, which is the case today.

Metric: Simulation runs with a grid resolution improvement of 4x.
