Scientific Grand Challenge: To be able to extract temporal-spatial features of geoscience interest from massive datasets utilizing content-based query software in real- or near real-time.
Scientific Understanding: To extract the positions of cyclone centers from a general circulation model (GCM) run on a 1x1 degree grid in roughly the same time it takes to extract similar information from a typical GCM running today at 4x5 degree resolution.
Computational Challenge: To identify and extract features utilizing no more than 1 percent of the size of the raw database.
Metric: Rate of feature detection improvement by an order of magnitude, as well as the types of features.
