Scientific Grand Challenge: To better understand the interaction of the Sun with the earth by integrating the coupled set of equations from magnetohydrodynamics, radiation transport, and material properties with sufficient spatial and temporal resolution to be able to distinguish between different physical effects by direct comparisons with quantitative measurements.
Scientific Understanding: To test solar flare models with spatial resolution of 0.2 arc seconds (120 km)
Computational Challenge: To increase grid resolution by four orders of magnitude in order to permit the separation of the physical spatial and temporal scales that characterize the solar convective and diffusive phenomena.
Metric: To meet the Computational Challenge requires a linear grid resolution on the order of 120 km.Thus, an increase of four orders of magnitude in grid resolution is required
