ESS Project: FY98 Annual Report

Applications

CRAY T3E Support for the Goddard Space Flight Center ESS Community

The following activities took place in FY98 to enable the use of the ESS CRAY T3E by the wider GSFC community:

Work on parallelization of the Goddard Cumulus Ensemble Model (GCEM) was initiated and has progressed steadily. W.K. Tao, a GSFC scientist, plans to use the parallel version of the GCEM to contribute to various efforts under the Mission to Planet Earth Project. Several advection routines of the GCEM are currently running successfully in parallel. (Rosalinda de Fainchtein)

PARAMESH was modified and tested for use in parallelization of weather application models, such as the GCEM. Successful use of this tool can tap into the load balancing and adaptive mesh refinement capabilities of PARAMESH, in addition to easing the transition to distributed memory utilization. (Rosalinda de Fainchtein)

The NCCS Technical Assistance Group (TAG) routinely helped users solve their problems relating to running their programs on the CRAY T3E. The nature of this help ranged from problems logging on to the machine, to help in debugging their code, to reporting problems with system software directly to the vendor. Occasionally, the TAG worked in conjunction with other ESS staff, particularly in dealing with system problems and complex programming issues. (TAG)

The NCCS TAG has written numerous web pages of technical documentation necessary for the effective use of the ESS Cray T3E machine. (TAG)
