ATM Network Infrastructure at GSFC

Objective

Provide ATM-based high performance networking and advanced network services for GSFC-based ESS testbed systems and users enabling:

Approach

Utilize an ATM testbed to evaluate deployment strategies for new networking technologies. Cooperate with HPCC NREN and GSFC Computational Network Environment projects on end-to-end architectures.

Accomplishments

ATM Networks at GSFC DiagramExtended GSFC's Earth System Science Network's (ESSN) 155 Mbps OC-3c ATM network from two to four buildings. Installed an ATM-based Firewall Router in a building, demonstrated its 155 Mbps capability, and interfaced it with the ESSN, NREN, and ATDNet. Enabled155 Mbps ATM connections from NCCS's CRAY J932 and the Data Assimiliation Office's DEC Alpha to the ESSN, and supported approximately 25 other directly ATM-attached hosts from several different computer manufacturers. Acquired NetStar Gigarouter for interconnecting HIPPI-attached computers, such as the new CRAY T3D, and the Convex/UniTree systems to the ATM-based ESSN.

Significance

An ATM-based network infrastructure is a key component in the evolution towards shared use of remote network resident resources by the science community. Whether GSFC investigators use remote testbeds, remote Investigators use GSFC testbeds, Investigators move data between distributed archives and testbeds or link various combinations of distributed testbeds, or high-performance computing is used in some other scenario, an evolving high-performance transparent GSFC network is an essential component.
