ATM Multi-Carrier Interoperability

Objective

Demonstrate use of interconnected ATM network provided by multiple carriers.

Approach

Cooperate with GSFC ESDIS Project and like-minded collaborators in networking research activities, and participate in and plan "network of networks," such as the Supercomputing conference I-WAY and the DARPA-funded Cooperative Advanced Internet Research Network.

Accomplishments

With ESDIS, participated in planning the I-WAY, which was used for Supercomputing '95, and enabled interconnectivity from the DARPA HQ-based Enterprise Room and from the University of Maryland at College Park on the Bell Atlantic-provisioned ATDNet to the Supercomputing '95 conference via the Sprint-provisioned NREN. Also supported several high performance data exchanges between GSFC and the EROS Data Center across the ATDNet/NREN and the Sprint-provisioned MAGIC and ACTS ATM InterNetwork.

Significance

Use of interconnected ATM carriers is likely to reduce NASA networking costs while furthering collaborative research between NASA and other federal agencies such as NSF and DARPA.
