Provide HPCC ESS and NREN Projects with effective testbeds for gigabit network R&D.
Participate in Washington, DC-based 2.4 Gbps SONET/ATM metropolitan area network testbed involving and interconnecting DARPA, DIA, DISA, GSFC, NRL, and NSA. Investigate and resolve problems with multivendor standards-based SVC interoperability and IP addressing, routing, multicasting, and firewalling over ATM.

Successfully updated and demonstrated ATDNet use since its Initial Operating Configuration on May 1, 1994. Supported DARPA-funded ACTS experiments, such as live demonstrations of Mayo Clinic-based telemedicine applications at the AFCEA '96 Conference using HDRT at GSFC accessed via ATDNet. Used ATDNet and the ACTS ATM InterNetwork in high performance ATM network routes between GSFC and the EROS Data Center, which enabled the GSFC Scientific Visualization Studio SGI ONYX (holodeck) to access and view in real-time the new 25,000 by 30,000 pixel image of Yosemite Valley using GSFC-developed VR extensions to the 3D TerraVision image browser resident on holodeck. Prepared and submitted the "Experiment Plan for 622 Mbps Network Tests Between ATDNet and MAGIC Via ACTS" to the ACTS Project at LeRC and developed specs for upgrading GSFC's connection to the ATDNet from 155 Mbps to 622 Mbps.
Participation in ATDNet facilitates significant leveraging of DOD funding to develop solutions to problems inherent with TCP/IP-based communications over networks with a large bandwidth-times-delay product.
